Flood and mudslide fatalities total 101 in September
TORRENTIAL rains and floods in western and central China have left 101 people dead or missing since early September, the Beijing News reported today.
Unprecedented autumn floods occurred about the same time in the Yangtze River and Yellow River areas from September 18 to 20, destroying over 105,000 houses and forcing 1.5 million people to evacuate.
Some 6.18 millions of people in Sichuan, Shaanxi, Hubei and Henan provinces and Chongqing Municipality have been affected and economic losses are estimated at 12.45 billion yuan (US$1.95 billion).
Continuous downpours have caused more than 40 rivers to swell to warning levels, the People's Daily reported.
The paper said more than 84 percent of those who have died so far this year were killed by floods or rain-triggered mudslides.
