Flood ordeal miners leave hospital

FIFTY-THREE of the 115 miners rescued from a flooded coal mine in Shanxi Province were discharged from hospital yesterday.

The miners were pulled from the flooded colliery on April 5 after being trapped for more than a week underground. They were initially treated in five local hospitals in Hejin City, where the mine is located.

Sixty were later transferred to three hospitals in Taiyuan, the provincial capital, for further treatment.

"Being in this hospital for the last 10 days has been the warmest experience of my entire life," said Tang Aijun, who was discharged from the No. 1 Hospital affiliated to Shanxi Medical University in Taiyuan.

He praised the doctors who had taken care of him.

The flooding claimed the lives of 37 miners. Rescuers are still searching for one more miner believed still trapped.

A total of 261 miners were in the shaft when the flood occurred on March 28, but 108 escaped unharmed.

Another 46 workers would be released soon, the provincial health bureau said. The remaining 16 are still under medical observation.
