Flood prevention praised
A conference marking 60 years of flood control on the Huaihe River, China's third longest waterway, was held yesterday in Bengbu City, Anhui Province.
"China has done well in its efforts to stop the Huaihe River from flooding over the past 60 years," Premier Wen Jiabao said in written instructions sent to the conference.
"Yet more needs to be done to further improve harmony between human activity and nature, and to promote economic and social development along the river," Wen added.
The 1,000-km-long Huaihe River starts in Henan Province and traverses Shandong, Anhui and Jiangsu provinces. The river floods a 1.73-million-hectare area, mostly in Anhui, every three to four years on average.
In 1950, the central government issued a circular outlining the Huaihe River flood control project.
Late Chairman Mao Zedong called on the country to "cure" the Huaihe River in 1951. A series of government policies aimed at controlling the flood-prone river were issued after Mao's remark.
The government has spent 44.7 billion yuan (US$6.7 billion) over the past 20 years on the construction of dams, reservoirs, flood control headquarters and other facilities, which have helped protect people and property from reoccurring floods.
