Flood threat evacuates 10,000
ABOUT 10,000 residents have been evacuated from their homes near the dam of a reservoir in Luocheng County of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region as flooding threatens.
Part of the dam was damaged after heavy rain fell throughout the day, China News Service reported on its Website today.
A flood by-pass is being dug. County officials deny they plan to blast the dam to relieve the pressure, according to the report.
The reservoir was first in danger in the early morning of June 24 when the bottom of the dam began to leak. The situation was under control the next day.
Heavy rains on June 29 and 30 took the water levels at the dam to 210.85 meters yesterday afternoon and part of the dam was damaged threatening flooding for residents in lower reaches of the river, the report said.
More than 500 people including soldiers and experts are on the scene.
More than 200 tents were sent for the evacuated residents. The report said it was still raining at the time it went to press.
