Flu-jab boy battles for life

A 15-YEAR-OLD boy is fighting for his life in south China's Guangdong Province after an illness his parents linked to an earlier vaccination against H1N1 flu.

Suspecting bleeding in his brain, doctors are waiting for CT test results to decide whether to perform surgery on Wang Weijun. But they said even if the operation succeeds, Wang may be reduced to a vegetable status, today's Information Times reported.

Wang's case gained national attention after his mother Li Aihong called the Guangzhou mayor's hotline for help on March 24.

She told mayor Zhang Guangning that the family had spent every penny to cure their son's illness and already owed 100,000 yuan (US$14,646).

Wang was vaccinated against H1N1 flu at his school on December 10 last year. Three weeks later, the former taekwondo player lost feeling in his legs.

He was diagnosed with myelitis, a spinal cord inflammation, which doctors said normally caused by a virus infection.

But doctors have not yet confirmed whether his illness was linked to the flu vaccination.
