Focus on father of hit-and-run driver
THE discipline watchdog in north China's Hebei Province will probe an online allegation that a senior police officer whose son sparked outrage after allegedly killing one girl and injuring another in a hit-and-run crash owned five luxury real estate properties.
The local discipline inspection commission promised to make the report public when the investigation is complete, yesterday's Beijing News reported, quoting Hebei Governor Chen Quanguo.
A post on Mop.com, a popular Chinese social networking site, said Li Gang owned one villa, three apartments and a shop in Baoding City, which a policeman cannot afford.
Hebei provincial government, education department and police have also teamed up to start an investigation at Hebei University, where the crash took place.
Chen said the accident has caused "severe damage" to the province's image.
To avoid interference, 22-year-old drunk driver Li Qiming will stand trial at an appointed court, but not in Wangdu County, Baoding City, where his father Li Gang is a deputy district director of the county's public security bureau. The trial will be open to the public and media.
Li Qiming was arrested on Sunday over the accident, which resulted in one death and one injury on the Hebei University campus on the evening of October 16. He shouted, "Sue me if you dare" and claimed his father was a high-ranking police officer as he tried to flee the scene, which sparked outrage.
