Followers mourn as ‘beautiful leukemia fighter’ dies in hospital

A 24-YEAR-OLD woman from Qingdao in Shandong Province, who was diagnosed with leukemia in early 2012 and wrote  a microblog about her treatment, died in hospital yesterday afternoon.

Lu Chao, whose Weibo name was Lu Ruoqing, wrote about her daily struggles in stories shared and forwarded by thousands of followers.

Lu became a Weibo celebrity and was named “the most beautiful leukemia fighter.”

Although enduring pain, she was always smiling, even when she was weak and lying on the hospital bed. Her online name, “Ruoqing” means “like sunshine.”

When Lu had to turn down a stem cell transplant surgery as her family couldn’t afford the 400,000-yuan (US$65,343) cost, Xue Manzi, the popular microblogger and investor now detained in connection with a sex scandal, initiated a charity program which raised more than 1 million yuan for her with the help of China Youth Development Foundation.

Lu was recovering after she had the surgery in Beijing, but a relapse meant she was admitted to hospital again last Sunday.

In her last post on Monday, Lu told her 268,414 followers that he had been suffering from a fever for 12 days and felt that death was approaching.

“I have no confidence in myself,” was the last sentence she wrote.
