Food poisoning hits 23
TWENTY-THREE college students in east China's Anhui Province suffered nitrite poisoning after eating lunch at a fast food restaurant in Fuyang City on Saturday, authorities said yesterday.
Officials said 22 of those affected have been discharged, and that the one student still in hospital was in stable condition.
The students from Fuyang Normal College were eating at the restaurant when they felt dizzy and began vomiting.
Police have closed the restaurant.
An initial investigation found that pickles sold there contained nitrite, Xinhua news agency reported. Used in pickling nitrite can be fatal in excessive quantities.
