Food poisoning outbreak hits kindergarten pupils

MORE than 20 children attending a kindergarten in Hebei Province have been struck down by suspected food poisoning.

Local disease control authorities are still investigating the case, China National Radio reported yesterday.

The incident occurred over the weekend in Zhangjiakou City. The children were sent to hospital with fever, diarrhea and vomiting. Some also had blood in their urine.

Doctors said the children are now in a stable condition, but would be kept in hospital for further observation for a couple more days.

Parents said symptoms appeared last Saturday morning. In the evening, the kindergarten called, asking whether children had the symptoms of acute gastroenteritis, and urging parents to take them to hospital immediately.

Zhangjiakou Center of Disease Control and Prevention tested food samples from the kindergarten. Results are expected today.

The kindergarten, which has more than 300 children on its roll, remained open following the incident.

Meanwhile, three primary school pupils in Yunnan Province were in a critical condition yesterday after eating food tainted by rat poison. The incident on Monday left one girl dead and another 21 students poisoned, Xinhua news agency reported.

Some 71 pupils at Xiaoliuzhai Primary School in the city of Wenshan are said to have eaten noodles and rice provided for lunch at the school canteen on Monday.

Of these, 22 were later found to have symptoms of food poisoning.

Police are investigating, said Xinhua.
