Footage of rare panda worries experts
IMAGES of a rare Qinling giant panda drinking from a river has alerted experts who say the animal may need medical treatment.
A farmer managed to shoot a video of the animal before it noticed him and returned to the safety of the jungle.
“I watched it for around five minutes,” said He Yijun, from Daguping Village in northwest China’s Shaanxi Province.
Yong Yange, a panda expert at a local nature reserve, said that the time the animal took to drink indicated that it may be ill.
He is urging local farmers to report any similar sightings, as the animal is probably in need of treatment.
The farmer shot the footage on March 9 near his village, which is part of a state-level reserve for the protection of Qinling wild giant pandas.
He said he thought he had found a huge calico stone, before he realized it was a giant panda moving very slowly.
The Qinling giant panda is a subspecies that was identified in the province’s Qinling Mountains in 2005. It differs from the more familiar Sichuan subspecies by its smaller and rounder skull, shorter snout and fuller fur. There are believed to be around 270 giant pandas in the region.
