For sale: Graves near martyrs
A MARTYRS' cemetery mangers have been accused of selling 600 of its grave plots at up to 18,000 yuan (US$26,832) each to local officials in northwestern Shannxi Province.
A cement grave was priced at 5,000 yuan and a marble one would cost 186,000 yuan, said a staff surnamed Chen cited by China News Service today. All graves have sold out and the buyers were said to be high-ranking officials in local government.
A total of 2,000 square meters of land in the memorial in Shangluo City was earmarked for commercial purposes.
The Shangluo Civil Affairs Bureau, which runs the cemetery, said it would start investigation. More than 26 martyrs were buried in the cemetery built in the early 1950s.
