Forbidden City to open more sites to tourists
THE Forbidden City in central Beijing will open to the public more sites that have been off-limits to ordinary vistors but keep its ticket prices unchanged.
The Forbidden City, also known as the Palace Museum, was the home of Ming and Qing dynasty emperors from 1420 to 1911. The museum authority plans to open 70 percent of the palace to public after a large-scale renovation completes in 2020.
Visitors currently can see only 30 percent of the imperial palace, Shan Jixiang, director of the State Administration of Cultural Heritage, told Beijing Morning Post.
More sightseeing areas could disperse the flow of people from the main halls aligned in the central axix during peak seasons, Shan said.
"The opened area in the Forbidden City can accommodate about 30,000 visitors a day, but the number can surge to 130,000 on major holidays," Shan said. "The expansion can greatly reduce the pressure of crowding."
The number of visitors to the Forbidden City has increased by 33 percent in the past eight years. More than 10 million people visited the palace last year alone.
Shan said the State Administration of Cultural Heritage has never thought about raising admission prices after the overhaul.
