Foreign mountaineers die in Tibet

THREE foreign mountaineers have reportedly died and one was injured while exploring mountains in Tibet this spring, the China Tibet Mountaineering Association said yesterday.

Tom Jorgensen, a 56-year-old Danish mountaineer, died of altitude sickness on May 19, said Zhang Minxing, secretary general of the mountaineering association.

Jorgensen came down with altitude sickness while on Mt Everest, known as Mt Qomolangma in China, and was sent to Zham Port in Tibet.

He died despite rescue efforts.

On May 3, Sergey Nkitin, a 53-year-old Russian mountaineer, was found dead in his tent at Mt Cho Oyu's camp 2, which is 6,800 meters above sea level. According to Zhang, Nkitin also died of high altitude sickness.

Meanwhile, Hungarian Luszlo Alfred Varkonyi, 54, died in an avalanche on the slopes of Mt Everest at about 7,028 meters on April 26.

His body was later found at 6,800 meters, according to Zhang.

Varkonyi's climbing partner was slightly injured.
