Formaldehyde found in Chongqing hot pot

A hot pot restaurant in Chongqing, southwest China has been found using an industrial chemical to keep meat fresh and its business license has been revoked by the local food and drug administration.

Authorities found 2 kilograms of formalin, a solution of formaldehyde which is a poisonous disinfectant, during a raid on the restaurant. Tests showed its cattle tripe contained an excess level of formaldehyde. Restaurant owner Zhu Taihe admitted using formalin to keep the tripe fresh, China National Radio reported today.

Zhu was fined 40,018 yuan (US$6,164) by the administration and was detained by the local police. His business license was also revoked by the authority.

Animal offal is commonly used in hot pot, a popular delicacy in Chongqing.
