Former Chinese mining tycoon's appeal heard

THE Hubei Higher People's Court on Monday heard the appeal of former mining tycoon Liu Han, a statement issued by the intermediate people's court of Xiannin City said.

Liu and his brother Liu Wei were sentenced to death in May this year for organizing and leading a criminal organization as well as murder.

Liu Han, 49, head of the Hanlong Group and one of China’s richest businessmen with a fortune estimated at US$855 million in 2012, and his brother Liu Wei, were sentenced to death in May.

They were convicted of leading a mafia-style gang and roles in murders.

Their gang, based in the southwestern province of Sichuan, killed eight people and injured many others over nearly 20 years, said the Xianning Intermediate People’s Court in central China’s Hubei Province.

In addition to the Liu brothers, gang members Tang Xianbing, Zhang Donghua and Tian Xianwei were sentenced to death.

Another 31 gang members were given sentences ranging from three years in prison to suspended death sentences.

They were found guilty of charges including illegal detention, blackmail, illegal possession of guns and defrauding banks.

Liu’s sister Liu Xiaoping, Hanlong’s chief financial official, was among those convicted. She has also appealed against her sentence.

The brothers denied leading a mafia-type gang.

Liu Han said Hanlong was a legal enterprise, the 21st Century Business Herald reported yesterday. He said employees who were gang members had received their just rewards in court.
