Former Guangxi chief to spend 18 years in jail

THE former vice president of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region was sentenced to 18 years in prison for corruption and accepting bribes yesterday in Nanning, capital of the region, China News Service reported today.

Nanning Intermediate People's Court also confiscated 1 million yuan (US$146,199) from Sun Yu, the former vice president of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

Sun asked other people to invent projects and swindled 3.2 million yuan from the provincial government from the second half of 2004 to November 2006, the court heard.

Sun asked for money or property and accepted bribes worth 3.28 million yuan by helping others to obtain raw materials and fulfill timber quotas. Most of the money has been handed in after Sun was arrested.

Sun served as the vice president of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region from 1998 to 2007.
