Former Party chief of nat'l science association stands trial over bribery
SHEN Weichen, former Party secretary and executive vice president of the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), stood trial on charges of taking bribes on Monday, according to a statement from a court.
Shen was accused of accepting bribes worth about 95.41 million yuan (around 14.5 million U.S. dollars) between 1992 and 2014, according to Changzhou City Intermediate People's Court, Jiangsu Province.
He allegedly sought profit for other people in business and promotion by taking advantage of his post or through other civil servants over the course of 22 years, the statement said.
Shen served as the Party chief of Taiyuan, capital city of Shanxi Province and deputy head of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee's publicity department before he assumed his posts at the CAST.
The court will give the verdict on a later date.
The CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection announced an investigation into Shen in April last year.
As China's largest national organization for science and technology workers, CAST maintains close ties with millions of Chinese scientists, engineers and other people working in the two fields, according to its website.
