Former Shandong official on trial for US$1.97m bribes
THE former deputy governor of Shandong Province went on trial for bribery in Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu Province, yesterday.
Huang Sheng was charged with receiving more than 12.23 million yuan (US$1.97 million) from 21 companies and individuals, in exchange for his "help."
Prosecutors said he used his position to advance the interests of others between the second half of 1998 and August 2011 when he was mayor of Dezhou in Shandong and later the provincial deputy governor.
No verdict was announced after the trial at the Nanjing Intermediate People's Court.
Last June, it was reported that Huang had been expelled from the Party for serious disciplinary and legal violations. He was also dismissed from all government posts by the State Council and the Party's Central Commission for Discipline Inspection.
The Party disciplinary watchdog said in a statement that all of his "ill-gotten money" had been confiscated, and he was under criminal investigation for corruption.
The statement also said Huang was "morally corrupt" and had caused the country massive economic losses, according to the People's Daily.
At the time, there were rumors Huang had taken bribes worth US$9 billion, kept 46 mistresses and owned 46 properties.
However, the central government hasn't confirmed any of these rumors and mistresses and property were not mentioned in court.
Huang, 59, a native of Weihai City in Shandong, joined the Party in 1975 and was a military cartographer. He became mayor of Dezhou City in 1996 and was elected deputy governor of the province in 2007.
