Former Taiwan leader sentenced to life in prison
FORMER Taiwan leader Chen Shui-bian was sentenced to life imprisonment by a Taiwan district court on corruption charges this afternoon, local media reported.
Chen was first indicted on Dec. 12 for money laundering and bribery. He and his wife were charged with embezzling 104 million New Taiwan dollars (US$3.15 million) in public funds and accepting bribes of at least US$9 million in a land purchase deal.
Chen was not present in court when the verdict was delivered.
Wu Shu-chen, wife of former Taiwan leader Chen Shui-bian, was sentenced to life imprisonment Friday afternoon by a Taipei district court, local media reported.
