Former admissions chief at Renmin University approved for arrest on bribery allegations

Cai Rongsheng, former head of admissions at Renmin Universtiy, has been approved for arrest on suspicion of bribery, authorities announced today.

An investigation found Cai, 49, had taken bribes of over 10 million yuan (US$1.6 million) between 2006 and 2013 for "helping" independent test candidates to enroll as the director of the Admission and Employment Office in the Beijing-based university, said prosecutors in Nanjing.

The prosecutor's office in Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu Province, was designated last November to be responsible for Cai's investigation.

Some Chinese universities have been allowed to recruit a certain number of students through their independent admission exams apart from the annual unified national university entrance exam since 2004.

However, this discretion in the admissions process has generated the risk of corruption.

It was reported last November that Cai was caught over graft allegations involving hundreds of millions of yuan when he was trying to take a flight from the southern city Shenzhen to Canada.
