Former chairman of Dalian Shide Xu Ming dies in prison

THE former chairman of Dalian Shide Group and Dalian Shide FC president Xu Ming died in prison on Friday, the Peninsula Morning Post reported.

Former Dalian Shide FC managing director Lin Lefeng confirmed the news to the Dalian-based paper on Sunday that 44-year-old Xu probably died due to acute myocardial infarction — a common cardiovascular emergency. His ashes were brought by his family back to Dalian on Sunday from Wuhan in Hubei Province, where he was serving his imprisonment.

Xu was investigated by the central government watchdog in March 2012 for paying bribes to Bo Xilai. Bo was the top government official in Dalian before 2004 before becoming the Party chief of southwest China’s Chongqing City.

Bo was also found guilty of corruption on several charges and sentenced to life imprisonment in 2013.

Xu founded Dalian Shide Group in 1992 and became a major sponsor of China’s top tier football club Dalian Wanda in 1999. The club changed its name to Dalian Shide FC the next year. It enjoyed tremendous success, clinching three successive league titles since 2000.
In 2005, Xu was listed by Forbes as the eighth richest Chinese, and by 2011, his asset were worth 13 billion yuan (US$2 billion).

Lin told the paper, Xu would have competed his prison term by September next year.
