Former cook detained in tiger corpse case

POLICE said they have detained one of the men they found carrying a dead Siberian tiger from the trunk of a sports utility vehicle yesterday in Wenzhou in southeastern Zhejiang Province when officers happened upon the scene.

The 31-year-old suspect surnamed Wang, who police said was caught at the scene, is the owner of the SUV and once served as a cook in Wenzhou.

The two men were carrying the wrapped corpse in downtown Wenzhou yesterday morning when they were questioned by a team of police officers headed to morning training. The other man managed to escape and was still at large.

The officers first suspected the wrapped package was a human body and required the two men to open it. Experts later identified the animal as a Siberian tiger. The case is under further investigation.

The Siberian tiger, also know as the Amur or Manchurian tiger, mainly lives in eastern Russia, northeast China and the northern part of the Korean Peninsula. It is estimated that only about 500 still live in the wild, including 11 to 13 in Jilin Province and some in Heilongjiang Province.
