Former law maker denies 400 bribery charges

A FORMER top law maker of an east China city denied his previous confession of taking bribes on more than 400 counts involving 4 million yuan (US$586,072) at a court hearing yesterday in Anhui Province.

Zhang Songjian, former vice dean of Chuzhou City Committee of the Chinese People's Congress, said he had been forced to confess to all the bribery charges and the testimony by 361were all lies, today's Anhuinews.com reported.

The case was heard at Huainan City Intermediate People's Court.

According to prosecutors, Zhang had taken bribes of 4.29 million yuan in cash and 70,800 yuan in shopping cards from 162 people during his 12-year tenure unil 2008 when he was investigated.

Among those offering backhanders were 153 government workers and officials who had sought Zhang's help to advance their careers.

They included the former vice chief prosecutor of Mingguang City Procuratorate Office, the former director of Mingguang City Justice Bureau and the former vice Party secretary of Mingguang City's Disciplinary Supervision Committee.

Zhang confessed to the charges three times during the past two years' investigation but twice denied his confessions.
