Former mayor accused of paying to get his title

THE former mayor of Luliang City in the northern province of Shanxi paid to get his title, it was alleged yesterday.

Ding Xuefeng, who was dismissed from his position on February 20, gave money to get promotion two years ago, an insider told China Business Journal.

The source claimed Li Dongsheng, a former vice minister of the public security, and Zhou Bin, an influential businessman, were also involved.

The State Council said on Monday that Li had been removed from office as an investigation is ongoing.

Zhou was also reported to have close ties to Sichuan business tycoon Liu Han — who has been accused of running a mafia-like gang — and disgraced officials in the China National Petroleum Corp.

Ding’s last public appearance was on Christmas Day.

An insider said Ding raised funds from entrepreneurs to buy the position of mayor when he was deputy Party chief in Luliang.

The city government did not confirm on the details of Ding’s case.

In another development, China’s top Party disciplinary watchdog yesterday said Zhang Dongyang, chief prosecutor in Shenyang, capital of the northeastern province of Liaoning, was also under investigation.

Sources said the 50-year-old was involved in illegal funds in projects when he was Party chief in Liaozhong County between 2004 and 2010, reported 21st Century Business Herald.

The newspaper said Zhang came under investigation last month after county officials confessed to corruption.

Zhang was elected as chief prosecutor last January.

A police officer from 1983, Zhang was promoted to deputy director of the city’s supervision authority in 2001.
