Ex-official sentenced to death for taking bribes
The former top legislator of a city in east China has been sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve for taking bribes, a court official said yesterday.
Zhou Jianhua, former chairman of the standing committee of the People’s Congress of Xinyu City, was convicted of taking 99 bribes and abusing his power, said Zhang Zhonghou, head of Jiangxi Higher People’s Court.
Zhang said Zhou accepted one bribe of 10.2 million yuan (US$1.6 million) and another in which he was given three gold bars weighing 50 grams each.
The first instance verdict by Yichun Intermediate People’s Court also deprived Zhou of his political rights for life and his personal assets were confiscated.
Zhou was elected to the top legislative post of Xinyu in September 2011.
Zhou has appealed the sentence. Jiangxi Higher People’s Court will hear the appeal.
Jiangxi Province courts completed 978 trials involving cases of embezzlement, bribery and dereliction of duty last year. The cases involved 1,216 defendants with 23 officials at county level or above being convicted of corruption.
Wang Guoyan, former Party chief of Nanchang Hangkong University, was sentenced to 15 years in prison for taking bribes totalling 6 million yuan.
In another case, Hu Lin, former deputy head of Jiangxi transport department, received 18 years after being found guilty of taking bribes in excess of 3.9 million yuan.
The Communist Party of China has vowed to target both “tigers” and “flies” — metaphors for senior and low-ranking corrupt officials — in the latest clampdown on corruption.
Last year, discipline inspection agencies punished about 182,000 officials nationwide, up 13.3 percent from 2012. Senior officials under investigation include Jiang Jiemin, former head of the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission.
