Former official took millions in bribes

XU Gang, former vice governor of southeast China’s Fujian Province, admitted taking bribes when he appeared at Hefei Intermediate People’s Court yesterday.

Between 2002 and 2013 he is said to have taken advantage of his official positions to seek benefits for others in exchange, for bribes worth 19.77 million yuan (US$2.96 million).

The bribes were received by him or through his wife, Yu Na, according to prosecutors in Hefei, capital of east China’s Anhui Province.

Xu is said to have expressed remorse and the court’s ruling will be announced at a later date.

The maximum penalty for accepting bribes of at least 3 million yuan in an “extremely serious case” with “extremely vile impact” is the death penalty, according to a judicial explanation issued in April. However, a two-year suspended death sentence may be issued if there are mitigating factors.

Nearly 50 people, including journalists and members of the public, were at yesterday’s hearing.
