Former officials facing trial on corruption charges

A FORMER mayor of Nanjing and a former senior Guizhou Province official were charged with corruption yesterday in two separate cases.
Ji’s resume shows he spent his political career in east China’s relatively wealthy Jiangsu Province, of which Nanjing is the capital, The Associated Press reported.
However, starting in 2009, Ji’s term as mayor was marred by controversy, including rare street protests over the mass removal of the city’s beloved plane trees for a subway construction project.
He is due to appear in a court in the neighboring province of Shandong in keeping with standard practice of forcing high-ranking Chinese officials to stand trial outside the region they once governed to minimize witness tampering or other possible intervention by their loyalists.
Liao Shaohua is a former member of the Party’s Guizhou Provincial Committee and former Party chief of Zunyi City in Guizhou.
Liao’s case will be heard by the intermediate court in Xi’an in northwest China’s Shaanxi Province.
Prosecutors say he took advantage of his position to seek profits for others and accept huge amounts of money or gifts.
Liao is also charged with suspected abuse of power, according to prosecutors.
