Former officials sent to prison

TWO former environment officials in south China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region were sent to prison yesterday for dereliction of duty in a river pollution case.

Mo Sijian, former director of the Pinggui branch of Hezhou’s Bureau of Environmental Protection, and Tang Chuancheng, former head of the bureau’s environmental monitoring team, were sentenced to two years and 18 months, respectively, by a local Court.

Mo had been entertained by the owners of Huiwei, an ore processor that polluted the Hejiang River, before ordering Tang to help the company obtain a pollutant discharge permit to which it was not entitled.

Their actions resulted in major environmental pollution. Dead fish were spotted in the river last July and an investigation revealed toxic thallium and cadmium.
