Former police chief condemned
THE former police chief in Chongqing Municipality, Wen Qiang, was sentenced to death yesterday for rape, corruption and sheltering gangsters.
Wen's wife, who cooperated with police, was jailed for eight years.
The decision on Wen was greeted with enthusiasm by a crowd at Chongqing's No. 5 Intermediate People's Court. Many of them were victims of rampant crime rings in the southwest city and held posters that read "death is justice for Wen."
He was found guilty of taking 12.11 million yuan (US$1.77 million) to turn a blind eye to six mafia-style gangs between 1996 and 2009.
During Wen's 14-year tenure, 1,447 murder cases were left unchecked, China Youth Daily reported yesterday.
He was unable to account for about 10 million yuan. He was also convicted of raping a university student after plying her with alcohol in 2007.
Wen is the most prominent person caught for protecting mobsters in Chongqing's anti-gang crackdown and the first corrupt official to be condemned over the issue.
The court also ordered all of Wen's assets to be confiscated.
Former lower-ranked officers Huang Daiqiang, Zhao Li'an, and Chen Tao stood trial with Wen yesterday for corruption and aiding and abetting underworld figures.
Huang, former deputy chief of criminal police in Chongqing, was jailed for 20 years, had 300,000 yuan confiscated and was fined 2.2 million yuan.
Chen, former deputy chief of the public order department, was jailed for 19 1/2 years and had 100,000 yuan confiscated.
Zhao, former deputy traffic police chief, was imprisoned for 17 1/2 years and fined 100,000 yuan.
Wen's wife, Zhou Xiaoya, was jailed for taking about 4.5 million yuan with her husband.
The swoop on underworld crime in Chongqing began last summer and authorities have detained 1,176 people and prosecuted 782 of them so far.
Eighty-seven officials have been prosecuted, including 12 of high rank.
