Former police officer arrested over murder

A FORMER senior police officer in Hainan Province has been arrested for allegedly murdering his mistress on Tuesday.

The suspect, surnamed Cen, had served as director of Government Offices Administration in Hainan's Ding'an County and was once vice director of the county's public security bureau, Hainan Special Zone Daily reported yesterday.

The body of a young woman was discovered at the reservoir in Ding'an at about 10am on January 6.

The victim was later identified as Chen, Cen's mistress.

Cen had met the woman in 2003 in a hotel where she was a waitress.

She became his mistress in 2004 and had a daughter by him in 2006. Cen bought her an apartment in Haikou, the provincial capital, but the pair were said to have had frequent arguments.

The 47-year-old Cen was married and had a son in college, and he is said to have confessed to police that he had planned to kill Chen to stop her disrupting his life and career. He is alleged to have enlisted the help of a friend called Xu.

Xu was sitting in the back seat of Cen's car when, it is alleged, he used his right hand to strangle Chen, who was sitting in the front, next to Cen.

They drove to the reservoir, where Cen is said to have asked Xu to hold a belt around Chen's neck before they dumped the body in the reservoir in a bag weighed down with cement.

A forensic report said Chen died of strangulation. Both Cen and Xu were arrested.
