Former police officer goes on trial
A FORMER police officer in Chongqing Municipality went on trial yesterday for allegedly leading a mafia-like gang that committed murder and took part in loan sharking, bribery and gambling.
Chen Kunzhi, 44, is the latest suspect to go on trial in a massive crackdown on the underworld in the southwest city, the China News Service reported.
Chen is accused of pulling in more than 200 million yuan (US$29 million) through lending 480 million yuan at illegally high interest rates.
Seventeen of Chen's alleged gang members stood trial with him at Chongqing No. 3 Intermediate People's Court charged with membership of a gang that controlled several casinos and the largest loan sharking company in the city.
A graduate from Chinese People's Public Security University, Chen left his post in a district police station in 1995 for taking bribes and being involved in street brawls.
Chen's trial is expected to last for six days.
