Former telecom boss sentenced
THE former deputy general manager of China Mobile, the world's largest mobile operator by number of subscribers, was sentenced to death yesterday with a two-year reprieve for taking bribes.
Zhang Chunjiang appeared before a court in Cangzhou, northern China's Hebei Province.
The Intermediate People's Court of Cangzhou City also ordered the confiscation of Zhang's personal assets and stripped him of his political rights.
The court found that Zhang, 53, took 7.46 million yuan (US$1.15 million) in bribes between 1994 and 2009 when he was deputy director of Liaoning Provincial Postal Administration, general manager of China Netcom Group Corporation Ltd, and Party chief and deputy general manager of China Mobile.
Zhang took bribes on multiple occasions from Song Shicun, general manager of a Beijing technology company, and Yang Ruining, chairwoman of a Beijing advertising firm, and her husband, Zhang Rui.
The suspended sentence, which can be commuted to life imprisonment after two years of good behavior, was given because he had confessed his crimes and all the bribe money had been recovered, the court officials said.
Zhang had previously been removed from his official post and expelled from the Communist Party of China for "severe violations of the discipline and the law."
Zhang's downfall was triggered when Song was investigated for economic violations, according to New Century magazine.
Song was said to have offered to "lend" Zhang several million yuan while he and his wife were going divorcing.
