Former top Jilin official gets life for bribery
A CHINESE court yesterday sentenced the former vice governor of the northeastern Jilin Province to life imprisonment for taking more than US$3 million in bribes.
Tian Xueren, who held senior positions in regional and provincial governments and was Party chief of Bank of Jilin between 1995 and 2011, pocketed about 19.19 million yuan (US$3.14 million) in bribes, the Beijing No.1 Intermediate People’s Court said.
The court said all the ill-gotten wealth had been seized, adding that Tian had cooperated with the investigation.
The 66-year-old was found to have abused his authority in allocating business contracts and promotions, in exchange of which he received cash from individuals and companies.
Jilin Zixin Pharmaceutical Industrial Co Ltd and Xu Weimin, a former police officer in the provincial capital of Changchun, regularly bribed Tian, the court heard.
Prosecutors also implicated Guo Chunsheng, former CEO of Zixin and a deputy to the provincial People’s Congress, in an earlier trial. Tian promised to favor Guo’s company in return for which Guo gave him US dollars worth 12.17 million yuan between 2005 and 2010.
Chang Zheng, a former CEO of Tianhe, another local drug company, also paid off Tian.
The Beijing News reported that Tian received bribes ranging from 5,000 yuan to 1 million yuan at his home and office in Changchun.
Tian was appointed executive vice governor of Jilin in 2004 and investigated by China’s top disciplinary watchdog in November 2011.
Early media reports said Tian’s illegal deals came to light after some of the cash was stolen from his house following a burglary.
He was expelled from the Communist Party of China and dismissed from all his posts for “severe disciplinary and legal violations” in 2012.
