Former vice governor pleads guilty to taking bribes for helping companies
Shen Peiping, former vice governor of southwest China’s Yunnan Province, yesterday pled guilty to taking more than 16 million yuan (US$2.5 million) in bribes, according to the Beijing No.1 Intermediate People’s Court.
Shen, 53, was put under investigation in March last year, and expelled from the Communist Party and dismissed from public office six months later.
Shen had been Party chief of Tengchong County, deputy secretary general of the provincial government, mayor and Party chief of Simao, now renamed Pu’er, between 2000 and 2012.
The court said he had taken advantage of his positions to help a number of companies with mergers, sales, transport and copper mine exploitation.
He had also sent police to handle a dispute between farmers and a rubber company which had resulted in the death of two villagers and injuries to another 13 local residents and 41 police officers.
The court will announce its verdict later.
