Fortune teller turns into serial killer

POLICE in northeastern Jilin Province have detained a man who allegedly killed and dismembered one man and seven women to rob money for his ex-wife because he believed he was doomed to die at the age of 53.

Zhang Shuhong, 51, a self-claimed fortune teller, suffered limb numbness as result of having polio as a child. He allegedly robbed the eight victims of cash and jewelry worth about 30,000 yuan (US$466) before slaying and dismembering them in July and August.

Zhang was motivated by his belief that he would die in 2012 and he wanted to leave a big fortune for his ex-wife, Li Yanqiu, whom he divorced earlier to clear her from his crime, China News Service reported on Saturday.

Zhang found the victims, mostly middle-aged unemployed, from a job market in Changyi County. He told them to work as part-time housekeepers and offered a monthly wage of 1,200 yuan.

When the victims followed Zhang to his apartment, Zhang lured them to drink water with sleeping pills. After they fell asleep, he strangled them to death with a nylon rope, dismembered their bodies, and threw them into a river in plastic bags.

Investigation showed some female victims were sexually assaulted before death, the report.

Zhang was captured at his father-in-law's home on August 19. Police later found a knife, an axe and the rope Zhang used to kill the victims in his apartment.
