Foster home blamed for the deaths of 2 children
A COUNTY foster home in Hunan Province was blamed for the deaths of two unwanted children after it called a junior doctor to treat them rather than send them to a nearby hospital, a media report said.
Chen Feihong, the only doctor at Hengdong County Welfare House, said the two children had fallen into shock after he was called to treat one on December 31 and the other the next day.
He failed to save Fu Lishui, a three-year-old girl, and Fu Lichang, a boy whose age wasn't disclosed, and their bodies were later cremated, Xinhua news agency reported yesterday.
Chen admitted he was a junior doctor and the medical facilities in the orphanage's clinic were worse than some rural clinics. Xinhua found the clinic was only equipped with simple medical instruments like a thermometer and syringes.
The county-run hospital was just 1 kilometer from the foster home, however, the report said.
The foster home said they thought they could save the children themselves and insisted they died of natural causes.
Both the children had congenital diseases and had previously been treated in a provincial hospital that had better doctors and facilities, the foster home said.
The girl had a heart disease, cleft lip and no anus while the boy suffered from cerebral palsy and acute renal problems. The boy was taken in by the home in 2007 and the girl in 2010, the report said.
Authorities were urged to investigate whether the welfare house was guilty of dereliction of duty, Xinhua reported.
