Foster home fire kills 7 children in Henan

AT least seven children have been confirmed dead in a blaze that broke out this morning in a private-run orphanage in the impoverished Lankao County in central China's Henan Province, online media reported.

Police said the shelter was run by Yuan Lihai, a stall owner who was dubbed the "benevolent mother" of more than 100 abandoned babies in the past 27 years. Her house is next to a local hospital.

Authorities are probing into the cause of the deadly fire, said a report on www.china.com.cn.

Due to her meager income, Yuan could only adopt about 40 children at a time in her house and feed them with buns and vegetables, the report said.

Some questioned whether she has a license to run the foster home, but the local civil affairs department just turned a blind eye to her operation because the local government is cash-strapped to build welfare homes for orphans, the report said.
