Foul-mouthed call arouses ire
A CLIP of phone call recording -- in which a chief traffic officer in central China curses foul words at a man who tried to complain about a road accident -- has aroused public anger after appearing on several bulletin board system sites.
Yao Haying, 49, head of the traffic bureau in Yueyang City, Hunan Province, is at the center of the storm, with many netizens criticizing him for acting like a gangster instead of a servant for the people.
However, Yao explained he was enraged because the man surnamed Li had earlier uttered a foul word insulting his mother when Yao answered the phone on Tuesday.
Li called Yao because he was dissatisfied with the settlement Yao gave on the night of August 15 after his car was hit by a falling advertisement board, the Yangcheng Evening News reported yesterday.
Li asked for a new car in compensation from the bureau, which Yao considered ridiculous.
Yao quickly hung up on Li and called a friend surnamed Zou, whose car was also damaged in the same accident, and started berating Li severely over the phone.
Zou recorded Yao's words and put them online.
The recording spread fast in cyberspace.
Yao said he admitted doing wrong. But he insisted on the original accident settlement.
He also said he lost his temper as he regarded Zou as an intimate friend.
