Four detained in thefts linked to web data leaks
FOUR men suspected of obtaining user information illegally from one of China's largest e-commerce websites and stealing money from its user accounts have been detained.
More than 2,000 customers of 360buy.com fell victim to the information leak and lost more than 30,000 yuan (US$4,785) in total, Beijing Haidian District Procuratorate said.
One suspect surnamed Chen obtained the account information of about 800 customers of the website as well as their passwords in February, Xinhua news agency reported yesterday.
If there was any prepaid money in the account, Chen and his partners would use it to buy goods including laptop computers, jewelry, mobile phones and lottery tickets. More than 10,000 yuan in 1,620 accounts was stolen this way, prosecutors said.
In early March, Chen shared the account information with another suspect surnamed Tang, who stole 7,351 yuan from the accounts to buy goods on 360buy.com.
Last December, another duo surnamed Xiao and Zhang also stole 9,000 yuan from 619 accounts and 15,000 yuan from 83 accounts, respectively. The four were apprehended in March by Haidian police.
The online theft is believed to be linked with two hacking incidents in December when CSDN.net, China's largest website for software developers, and Tianya BBS, a popular social networking site, reported user information leaks.
The leak of CSDN.net was considered the biggest in China's history as information of over 6 million web users was compromised.
