Four, including foreigner, die in crashes with drunk, drag-racing driver
FOUR people, including one foreigner of unknown nationality, were killed yesterday when a 23-year-old man who was drunk driving and racing another luxury vehicle slammed into two taxis and a bicycle, according to police in Guangzhou, capital of south China’s Guangdong Province, who had the man in custody.
Two other taxi passengers were hospitalized for minor injuries following the predawn accident, Southern Metropolis Daily reported today. One of them, a woman, is believed to be from Uzbekistan. The suspect, surnamed Li, had leg fractures, the report said.
Witnesses said Li, driving a Mercedes-Benz, was racing another luxury car when he crashed into the rear of a red taxi at around 4am. Instead of stopping, he sped up and hit a bicycle and another taxi, witnesses said.
The heavily damaged red taxi stopped nearly 300 meters from where it was hit. The driver and two passengers, one of whom was a foreigner, died at the scene.
A woman on a bike was severely injured and died at a hospital. The report said she was believed to be a cleaning worker in her 60s, but police didn’t confirm it.
Blood tests showed Li was driving drunk.
