Four instructors held after boy is beaten to death

PROSECUTORS in a southern China city yesterday ordered the arrest of four instructors allegedly involved in a fatal beating that killed a 16-year-old boy at a camp to treat Internet addiction.

Four instructors from Qihang Salvation Training Camp, Huang Yejian, Wei Gaojian, Guo Zhicai, and Li Qunlai, were arrested over allegedly beating Deng Senshan to death on August 2, according to Xinhua news agency today.

The victim was sent by his parents to the camp in Nanning, capital of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, to cure his Internet addiction. Deng died just 13 hours after he arrived at the camp on August 1.

The four locked Deng in a room soon after his admission as he refused to cooperate with instructors, according to the prosecutors' statement. It said Deng was brutally beaten by the foursome.

The boy developed fever and nausea. In the early hours of August 2 he was rushed to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead at 3:15 am, according to the statement. Forensic results have confirmed that he was beaten to death.

City authorities declared that the camp was running without a license and closed the operation after the boy's death. The victim's family has been paid compensation of 1 million yuan (US$146,374). The camp's co-owner, Guangxi Electronics Technology School, and a local media organization that promoted the camp paid half the compensation.
