Four kids' bodies uncovered, arrest made
DEAD bodies of four children were dug out from the soil under a bridge in a county in neighboring Jiangsu Province and police have arrested a man suspected of involvement in the death of one of them.
Police from Xiangshui County said yesterday that the man, Sun Hailang, was arrested on suspicion of causing the death of a four-year-old girl, Sun Ji'er. The man was the boyfriend of the victim's mother and they were living together in the county before the girl's suspicious death on the day before Chinese New Year's Eve. Police believe the suspect beat up the girl, causing her death from serious injuries, based on witness accounts and autopsy results.
The discovery of the four bodies became public after some web users uploaded a series of photos showing a big crowd of onlookers gathered to witness a digging operation under the Yulang Bridge. One photo showed a muddy baby corpse in a bundle of clothes lying near one of the newly dug pits. One witness said online that several such baby corpses had been dug out from under the bridge over the weekend. The posts had been forwarded hundreds of times by yesterday afternoon.
Local police yesterday said their investigations had ruled out foul play in the deaths of the other three children. They were infants who had died after failed medical treatment at the county hospital and their bodies had been allowed by their relatives to be buried there.
Police said the site under the bridge was shared by local villagers to bury dead babies as part of a village custom, in which dead babies are buried instead of being cremated.
The discovery was triggered by an alert from the girl's father on Sunday, according to police. The girl's parents had broken up and the mother moved with the girl to live in the county with her new boyfriend.
When the father visited the county last Friday to see the daughter, the woman told him the girl had died on January 21, the day before Chinese New Year's Eve. She would not tell how the girl had died but said she had rushed her to the county hospital for emergency treatment which was in vain.
The mother said she was charged 800 yuan by the hospital to deal with the corpse. The father insisted on seeing the daughter's body after witnesses told him they saw head injuries when the girl was being treated. He then alerted the police, who later dug out the four bodies.
