At least four people died after multiple vehicle pileups caused by fog on a highway section in Shandong Province, Qilu Evening News reported.
Heavy fog which shrouded the province this morning has caused a pile-up of hundreds of vehicles on the Beijing-Taipei Highway (Highway G3) near Wenhe River Bridge. At least four people were killed, the paper said.
In another major route linking Beijing and Shanghai (Highway G2), dozens of vehicle crashed to each other near Tai'an. The accident has resulted in serious casualties but the details are not yet available, China Central Television reported.
Nearly 50 highway entrances have been closed in the Shandong section of Highway G2.
The fog reduced visibility to less than 50 meters in some places in Shandong and a red fog alert was issued by the weather bureau of Liaocheng City while an orange alert was issued by Heze City.
In Ji'nan, the provincial capital, visibility fell to below 500 meters.
Drivers have been advised to take appropriate safety measures and find safe parking space as soon as possible. Others were told to reduce outdoor activities.
