Four workers arrested over dam collapse
FOUR workers have been arrested for causing a dam to collapse in south China's Hainan Province on March 27, which blocked a highway, flooded crop fields and washed away two cars, Nanguo Metropolis News reported yesterday.
The highway was reopened to traffic in early April.
The Wanning City prosecutors issued the arrest warrant for the four men after police investigators found their improper practices had caused the collapse, the report said.
The workers destroyed part of the cofferdam before the water dropped to a safe level, directly causing the dam to collapse under weight.
The dam holding a reservoir of 1.02 million cubic meters of water in in Xinglong Town, Wanning City, collapsed at about 10pm, flooding a nearby highway, injuring three people traveling in two cars, and inundating 20 hectares of farmland. Total damages were valued at 6 million yuan (US$879,752).
