Fourth man held for 'revenge attack'

A HOSPITAL official was detained yesterday in connection with "revenge" attacks on a popular science writer and the editor of a financial journal.

Xiao Chuanguo, head of the Urology Department of Wuhan Union Hospital, was caught at Shanghai's Pudong International Airport.

He is said to have confessed to arranging attacks on Fang Zhouzi, who is renowned for exposing academic fraud, on August 29, and on Fang Xuanchang, an editor of the financial journal Caijing, on June 24.

Xiao reportedly said the attacks were motivated by revenge, as he believed the two Fangs' exposure of his academic frauds made him fail to become a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Earlier this month, Beijing police arrested three other men in connection with the attacks.

Xiao said he hired Dai Jianxiang, 45, and Dai arranged for two other men, Long Guangxing, 31, and Xu Lichun, 32, to commit the attacks.

Fang Zhouzi suffered slight injuries when he was attacked with pepper spray and a hammer near his Beijing home.
