Fourth officer dies after shooting

A POLICE officer died of his wounds yesterday following a dramatic shoot-out in Tai'an City in Shandong Province on Tuesday which left three of his colleagues dead.

Five others, including two civilians, who were injured in the shooting, are being treated in Tai'an 88 Military Hospital, Sdnews.com.cn reported.

Liu Lumin, 52, shot himself after he and his brother, Liu Jianjun, 50, were cornered by police.

The younger brother, who had served two prison sentences for robbery and assault, was arrested. The older brother had previously been detained for theft.

Police seized a double-barreled shotgun, a homemade pistol and 187 bullets after the incident.

The Tai'an Public Security Bureau said yesterday that the three who died in Tuesday's shooting were Li Liang, 25, an auxiliary police officer; Xia Bo, 37, senior police officer; and Qi Honghai, 49, a traffic police officer.

Police officers went to the home of one of the Liu brothers as part of an investigation into a murder in Shandong's Dezhou City. The two suspects opened fire after officers had revealed their identity.

The suspects fled the apartment and led the police on a city-wide chase, hijacking four vehicles and shooting two of the drivers.

They tried to resist arrest by brandishing knives and threatening to shoot after they were cornered. Before police could seize the pair, the elder brother turned the gun on himself.

"We launched an emergency plan and deployed police across the city," said Xu Zhigang, the bureau's deputy director.

The suspects ran toward a parked car after the initial shoot-out. They threatened the driver at gunpoint but he drove off at speed, according to a witness called Zou Yuanfen. Then they rushed to another car. The driver gave them the keys after they held a gun to his head, Zou said.

They then hijacked another vehicle and about an hour later seized a sport utility vehicle. The SUV rammed into a police car which was giving chase and crashed. They tried to escape in a van before finally being surrounded by police vehicles.
