Foxconn parent plans to hire 1.5m over 5 years
HON HAI Precision Group, the parent of Foxconn Technology Co, plans to hire 1.5 million employees on Chinese mainland within five years.
Terry Gou, chairman of the world's largest electronics contract manufacturer, yesterday said the hiring plan is driven by the company's expansion from the southern Shenzhen City to inland provinces of Henan and Sichuan, which are closer to employees' homes.
The Taiwan-headquartered company, which currently has 920,000 mainland employees in its Shenzhen plants, will increase the ratio of its mainland workers among total work force to 66 percent once the move is finished, reported Taiwan-based China Times.
Under the plan, the company will also relocate two-thirds of its workers in Shenzhen to inland cities, said Louis Woo, CEO special assistant.
The hiring plan came out amid a hail of criticism after the company experienced a spate of suicides between January and May. Ten workers aged 18 to 24 died after 12 people jumped from the company buildings to committee suicide. Public criticism has blamed Foxconn for its harsh management.
Gou said he felt "guilty" about the tragedies, but blamed employees' personal problems and insisted his company was not like those sweatshops in poor working conditions and treatment.
Instead, the company has taken various measures to protect its employees' safety, such as installing safety nets to prevent possible jumps, hiring counselors, and doubling the base wage for workers in Shenzhen.
