Foxconn to hire 1.5 million workers

FOXCONN plans to hire 1.5 million workers in Chinese mainland in the next five years despite strong criticism of its tough management after 13 employees attempted suicide.

Terry Gou, chairman of the world's largest electronics contract manufacturer, said the hiring plan is driven by the company's move from coastal Shenzhen, a city neighboring Hong Kong, to inland Henan and Sichuan provinces which are closer to employees' homes.

The Taiwan-headquartered company currently has 920,000 employees in Shenzhen and will increase the ratio of its mainland workers to 66 percent once the move is completed, China Times, a Taiwan newspaper, reported today.

The hiring plan was made after the company was haunted by a spate of suicides this year. Gou said he felt "guilty" about the tragedies, however, he denied Foxconn was running a sweatshop.
Instead, he said the company had taken various measures to protect employee safety, such as installing safety nets to prevent possible jumps, hiring mental health counselors, and doubling the base salary of its workers in Shenzhen.
