Fraud attempt uncovers secret double life
A SECRET double life has been exposed by Party officials investigating a senior official in northern China accused of trying to defraud 450 million yuan (US$65.92 million) by pretending to be the daughter and only heir of a rich businessman.
Wang Yali was sacked last month from her post as deputy secretary of the Communist Youth League in Shijiazhuang city, Hebei Province, according to today's Beijing News.
Party officials discovered that everything on her official records was fake – including her name and date of birth, the report said.
Her real name was Ding Zengxin, and her identity was uncovered when she tried to take control of the fortune left by a rich businessman in his will.
The man's family, surnamed Wang, first met Ding when she showed up at their father's funeral with 20 police officers and tried to claim his body in 2008, the report said.
She was after control of his fortune but a DNA test proved she was no relation, Party disciplinary authorities found.
Another three city officials were arrested on suspicion of helping the woman get fake documentation, and more may be implicated in the scandal.
