Free entry to dam ... but only for Chinese
FOREIGN tourists will still have to pay to visit the Three Gorges Dam, even though charges were yesterday scrapped for Chinese visitors.
The dam authorities said they made admission free for Chinese citizens to visit the world’s largest hydropower project as a thank you for public good wishes and support.
But foreigners still need to pay 105 yuan (US$17.10) per person to tour the dam in Yichang in central China’s Hubei Province.
Officials defended the decision.
“Some other countries also only benefit their people (at attractions). It is common,” said Zhang Jin, media contact section chief of the China Three Gorges Corp.
However, she didn’t rule out the possibility that foreign visitors will also be admitted for free in future.
Work began on the dam in 1994. In 2003, its reservoir began storing water and the project opened to the public.
Sha Xianhua, the group’s deputy general manager, said free admission would attract more visitors and boost local tourism.
Also, the group wanted to reward the public and fulfill its social responsibilities, the corporation said.
The new rules benefit residents from China’s mainland and Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, plus Chinese nationals living overseas.
